The electronic cigarette, up to 6 times more effective than traditional nicotine substitutes
\nA major new study, carried out by researchers at Queen Mary University of London, looked at the effectiveness of electronic cigarette in smoking cessation. For six months, researchers followed 135 smokers suffering from severe nicotine addiction. Two groups were created: smokers using nicotine substitutes (patch, gum or spray), and smokers who swapped their tobacco cigarette for a vaping device. Here is a summary of the study's findings: \n- \r\n
- 19% of vapers (“electronic cigarette” group) were able to completely quit tobacco cigarettes; \r\n
- Only 3% of users of nicotine substitutes were able to stop smoking; \r\n
- In the “electronic cigarette” group, 27% of participants reduced their consumption of tobacco cigarettes by half (or more), compared to 6% in the nicotine substitutes group. \r\n
An observation shared by authoritative health organizations
\nThis observation is not isolated. Indeed, many public health actors are coming out of their reservations and recognizing that electronic cigarettes have a certain usefulness in the fight against smoking, starting with the National Academy of Medicine. Indeed, the “Wise Men” have several times stepped up to criticize the position of the World Health Organization (WHO), which is hostile to electronic cigarettes whatever the conditions. The National Academy of Medicine recalls that the electronic cigarette has allowed some 700,000 French people to overcome their tobacco addiction since 2012, an achievement that no classic nicotine substitute has achieved. However, it is nicotine substitutes that are reimbursed by Social Security. On the other hand, Public Health England, the English equivalent of Public Health France, explains that electronic cigarettes are up to 95% less harmful than tobacco cigarettes in view of their respective chemical compositions. Indeed, the electronic cigarette prevents the vaper from inhaling toxic and potentially carcinogenic substances formed during the combustion of tobacco. These include certain formaldehydes, carbon monoxide and even tar. \n\nSmokers who wish to use electronic cigarettes or any other vaping device to overcome their tobacco addiction must, however, respect certain precautions: \n- \r\n
- Opt for e-liquids with perfect traceability and listed by ANSEM to avoid any risk of adulterated products; \r\n
- Obtain supplies from a reliable retailer, offering a wide choice of batteries and batteries and offering expert advice on finding the right vaping device; \r\n
- Do not combine electronic cigarettes and tobacco cigarettes in the long term so as not to aggravate your nicotine addiction; \r\n
- Consult your doctor or a tobacco specialist to find the “minimum sufficient” nicotine concentration. \r\n
