Artistic fencing: what does it consist of?

An artistic fencing duel\nL'fencing artistic is a modern adaptation. It is full of elements of historical fencing and performing arts. Its primary goal is to stage choreographed fights presented in competition. Indeed, artistic fencing is part of artistic sports and the weapon phases are then integrated into the stage performance, often with music and rarely with text. We cannot talk about fencing without having demonstrated its practice from top to bottom. \n\n\n

How is artistic fencing practiced?

\n\n\nArtistic fencing is a combat simulation. There we find simple and compound attacks, counter-parries, opposition parries, linear movements, etc. But also ambidextrous and bare-handed circular movements. There are three weapons suitable for practice: the epee, the saber and the foil. It should be noted that weapons are becoming sexualized. So there is the female and male epee, the male and female foil and the same for the sabre. We also note that the events are individual or team. There are precisely twelve of them. Multiple actions in this sport are spectacular and inspired by historical treaties such as the volte, the flankonade or disarmaments. \n\n\n\nAnd unlike sports fencing, the touch is avoided as much as possible. The weapon phase must create an illusion and must be credible for a spectator. And since the actors do not wear masks or fencing jackets, safety techniques must be applied. This is why the weapon phases are being reworked to be readable by the public. They are fixed in choreographies, as with dance, there is only room for improvisation. Obviously, it is difficult to list the weapons of artistic fencing. \n\n\n

What about his weapons used?

\n\n\nGenerally, the weapon is chosen according to the context of the weapons phase. For example, if the fight takes place in the 17th century, the rapier will have a high chance of being used. Weapon choice may vary. As an illustration, classic weapons such as the court sword, the rapier, the dagger, the cane, the staff, including weapons from fictional universes up to the pipe, an iron rod, an umbrella, a sausage, dry or a pole to make. It is also possible to integrate hand-to-hand combat. \n\n\n\nGenerally, despite their resemblance to historical originals. The weapons are reproductions suitable for show use. Very often, they become lighter and neutralize each other. The edge of the blade is no longer sharp and the tip is rounded, which does not make them harmless. Also, it must be repeated that the best way to avoid accidents is good command of the weapon and in-depth work on techniques and safety concepts. \n\n\n

The status of artistic fencing

\n\n\nTo acquire knowledge in this sport, particularly in France, teaching can only be done by holders of 1st and 2nd degree state certificates in sports fencing. Other forms such as artistic, historical, medieval, have no place in the texts. A module devoted to artistic fencing was for several years compulsory in the master training course. When the training of fencing coaches changed, the molecule disappeared. \n\n\n\nIn English-speaking countries, several associations, such as the British Academy of stage and screen combat, Fight Director Canada and the Society of American Fight Director offer professional training in show fencing also accessible to amateurs. The International Academy based in Germany recognizes these training courses. Which academy has been offering training for several years with the title of master of show fencing weapons. There is therefore no official term to designate the practitioner and the one that comes back is: “Swashbuckler” the one who likes to fight. \n\n\n\nThank you for your interest in our site\n
