Ursula von der Leyen hopes renew his mandate
The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, clearly expressed his intention to renew his mandate at the head of the institution. However, the negotiations promise to be complicated, in particular because of the question of the Green Pact, which weighs heavily in the debates.
The European Green Deal: a contested priority
THE Green Deal European Union, also called the Green Deal, is both the pride and the burden of von der Leyen's presidency. The former German Defense Minister sees the Green Deal as a unique opportunity to "redesign the European economy", not only to make Europe more competitive on the international scene, but also to guarantee a sustainable future for its citizens.
THE negotiations around the renewal of the mandate
Within the European Union, debates are intensifying around the renewal of von der Leyen's mandate. If its supporters highlight its progress in environmental matters and welcome its leadership in managing the health crisis, its detractors criticize its lack of firmness in the face of member states refractory to the Green Deal.
His political opponents also question his ability to manage tensions between member states over their respective financial contributions to this large-scale environmental transformation plan.
