Understanding the square meter of wood before buying: volume, size and price
Today we will discover how the volume of a stere of wood is calculated and how the size or price per stere may vary. Should you buy a large or a small one? With this article, you will be able to better understand the different parameters influencing the stere of wood and determine the good quality/price ratio. What is a stere of wood?

A stere of wood is an official unit of measurement which corresponds to one cubic meter (m³). A stere is also called a pile, cord or even unit of wood depending on the region. It is used to weigh wood and its quality as well as to calculate the price of wood for sale. A stere of wood is generally considered to be a set or stack of wooden logs. The size of a log may vary:
  • 10cm,
  • 15cm,
  • 20 cm or
  • 25 cm in length
  • 7 cm to 10 cm wide.
Each log may not measure exactly the same length and/or width. However, the volume of a cubic meter itself will not always be identical depending on the size of the logs. Read also: The secret advantages of the thermodynamic water heater: Advantages, risks and assistance

How is the volume of a stere calculated?

The volume of a stere of wood varies depending on the length of the logs that make it up. The conversion coefficients are defined by law in order to adapt the volume to each type of length for each species of wood.
  • Logs cm: 1m = 1m³ — 50cm = 0.8 m³ — 33cm = 0.6 m³ — 25cm = 0.5 m³.
  • Long logs: 1m = 1m³ — 80cm = 0.8 m³ — 60cm = 0.6 m³ — 40cm = 0.4 m³.

How big can a stere of wood be?

THE volume of one stere may therefore vary depending on the following data:
  • the length of the logs (from 10cm to 80cm),
  • the width generally appearing on the bags (from 7cm to 10cm)
  • the number of logs contained in a stere (from 6 to 8 for a normal size).
THE frying pans are listed separately because they are less than 1m³ for 5 cubic meters or 2/3 cubic meters leaving the sawmill depending on the configurations used. Read also: How Air-Water Heat Pump Can Reduce Your Energy Consumption and Save You Money

How much does a stere cost?

The price is calculated based on the estimated volume and not the exact weight. The more wooden logs will be larger the higher the price will be compared to the smaller dimensions. Moreover, sellers offer different prices for various species as well as their estimated volume hammered out by the corresponding coefficient. For example, a stere of wood composed of logs measuring 1 meter costs on average €60. Even if the stere is smaller (50 cm logs), the price remains approximately the same because the legal rate converting volumes is not very pronounced (0.8 m³).

Conclusion

A stere of wood is an official unit of measurement which corresponds to one cubic meter. THE volume of one stere is calculated according to the length of the logs and their conversion coefficients and can vary depending on the appearance of the wood and its quality. THE price of one stere is also calculated according to the estimated volume and not the exact weight. It is important to understand the extent to which log size affects volume and price.
