The mayor of Avdiïvka anticipates an “escalation” of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict
The mayor of the industrial city Avdiïvka, located east of theUkraine, is concerned about a potential escalation in theRussian offensive which has already been plaguing his town for several years.
An escalating conflict
The Donbass region in eastern Ukraine, of which Avdiïvka is a part, has been torn by violent conflict since 2014 between Ukrainian government forces and pro-Russian separatists. Although the city is under Ukrainian control, it is on the front line of this latent war which has already left 13,000 dead.
According to the mayor of Avdiïvka, known for its coke production industry, the conflict shows no signs of easing. On the contrary, it announces a probable escalation violence with an intensification of attacks from Russia.

The citizens of this industrial city live in constant fear of bombings and sniper fire. Their daily lives are punctuated by water and electricity restrictions, and limited accessibility to basic necessities, making their situation increasingly precarious.
According to the mayor, despite the situation, the city is trying as best it can to hold on and continue to operate. However, the arrival of winter and the forecast of escalation of theRussian offensive fuel fears of an increasingly desperate situation.
In the shadow of a humanitarian crisis
The crisis plaguing Avdiïvka goes far beyond the military framework. It is above all humanitarian, endangering thousands of lives and pushing an entire population to live in deplorable conditions.
The mayor of Avdiïvka therefore calls for greater international aid to deal with this situation, with the support of the international community and the European Union. He thus hopes to be able to somewhat ease the suffering of his population who live to the rhythm of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.
The resilience of the industrial city and its population will be put to the test in the months to come, with this dreaded escalation of the violence generated byRussian offensive.
