The army said the strikes were a response to hundreds of rockets launched from Gaza into Israeli territory. Israeli forces also said the majority of targets were military installations belonging to Hamas, the organization that controls the Gaza Strip. Other targets included command posts and underground tunnels used by militants to move weapons and fighters across territory.

The failure of the truce

The truce between Israel and Gaza, negotiated with the help of Egyptian and UN mediators, ended with a new wave of violence. Both sides accused each other of violating the terms of the agreement. Since then, the situation in the region has become increasingly tense, with regular exchanges of rocket fire and airstrikes.

The international community calls for calm

Faced with this escalation of violence, the international community has once again called for restraint. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for an “immediate cessation of hostilities” and a return to the negotiating table. Similarly, the European Union and the United States have both called for rapid de-escalation to avoid another full-scale war.

As the situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate, the world waits with concern to see whether calls for peace will be heeded and whether a new ceasefire can be negotiated. In the meantime, Israeli strikes on Gaza appear to continue unabated.
