Investigation into secret meetings between Gianni Infantino and Swiss prosecutor closed
The dismissal of the investigation aimed at Gianni Infantino
\n\nIn a context marked by the involvement of numerous football personalities in corruption cases, the investigation targeting the president of FIFA, Gianni Infantino, finally finds a way out. Swiss authorities decided to close the investigation which implicated him in secret meetings with a Swiss prosecutor.
\n\nGianni Infantino, subject of a controversial investigation
\n\nThe President of FIFA, Gianni Infantino, was at the heart of an investigation following meetings he allegedly organized in secret with Michael Lauber, then attorney general of Switzerland. These meetings, which allegedly took place in 2016 and 2017, raised many questions.
\n\nSwiss investigators wondered if these meetings could have a link with another investigation, that relating to a corruption scandal which splashed FIFA and led to the indictment of several of its leaders. These suspicions led to the opening of an investigation against Gianni Infantino.
\n\nA classification without follow-up which relieves the president of FIFA
\n\nAfter months of investigations, the Swiss extraordinary prosecutor decided to close the investigation targeting the FIFA president. Although this does not mean thatInfantino is completely exonerated, this puts an end, for the moment, to his legal involvement.
\n\nWith this decision, the prosecutor expressed his doubts about the commission of a criminal offense by Infantino during his meetings with the prosecutor. The FIFA President therefore sees a shadow lifted on his mandate and can now devote himself fully to his duties.
\n\nA relief for the image of international football
\n\nThis decision comes as a relief for Infantino but also for international football. This investigation had indeed raised questions about the way in which FIFA was managed and was seen as a blow to the already tarnished image of the organization following the numerous corruption scandals which have erupted in recent years. By closing this investigation, the Swiss authorities provide some relief to FIFA and its president.
