Gaza: war enters its seventh month

\n\nThe war in the gang Gaza sees its 7th month without much progress in peace negotiations. Despite the humanitarian gravity, the fighting and bombings have seen no notable truce. Clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinian factions have caused an extremely worrying humanitarian situation, increasing the number of deaths and injuries on the Palestinian side.\n\n

An extremely worrying humanitarian situation

\n\nAccording to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), nearly 2,000 Palestinians have been killed and more than 10,000 injured since the start of the war. Most of them, regardless of age or gender, are unarmed civilians. On the other hand, the massive destruction of infrastructure has left many Gazans without access to clean water, electricity and proper medical care.\n\n

Negotiators expected in Cairo

\n\nIt was announced that negotiators high level were expected at Cairo in the coming days. This diplomatic mission is seen as a glimmer of hope to put an end to this bloody impasse which has persisted for months. The conflicting parties are expected at the negotiating table to discuss the possibility of a lasting ceasefire agreement and measures to ensure the reconstruction of Gaza.\n\n

Blocking points for peace negotiations

\n\nUnfortunately, the road to a peace agreement appears to be littered with many obstacles. Hamas, the Islamist group controlling Gaza, insists on an end to the Israeli blockade which is stifling Gaza's economy and restricting the freedom of movement of its residents. On the other hand, Israel demands that Hamas be disarmed and that it no longer represents a security threat. These conflicting demands pose a great challenge for negotiators seeking to restore peace to the region.\n\nThe whole world hopes that the talks in Cairo will lead to a viable and lasting solution to end this ongoing human tragedy. Only genuine political will and genuine adherence to the principles of international law can help emerge from this disastrous situation and raise awareness of the need for a two-State solution, living side by side in peace and security. \n\n
