European Union imposes twelfth set of sanctions on Russia

The European Union imposes a twelfth package of sanctions against Russia

Faced with an increasingly tense international situation, theEuropean Union announced this week the adoption of a new package of sanctions against Russia. This is the twelfth of this type, proof of the intensification of tensions between the two parties.

A reaction to a situation deemed unacceptable by Brussels

The reasons for this decision are multiple, but all revolve around the same point: respect for international law. L'European Union regularly accuses the Russia not to respect the rules of the international organization, whether in Ukraine, in Syria or with regard to cyber security issues. These sanctions are therefore a way of expressing discontent and trying to restore a certain balance.

A major economic impact for Russia

The adoption of these news sanctions against Russia could have major economic consequences for this country. Previous sanctions have already strongly affected the Russian economy, and this twelfth package could well worsen the situation. The ruble has already lost its value against the euro and the dollar, and foreign investment in Russia is in freefall.

A series of sanctions that are not about to stop

This twelfth packet of sanctions probably won't be the last. Indeed, the European Union has indicated on several occasions that it is ready to intensify sanctions against Russia, as long as it does not respect its international commitments. It therefore seems that relations between the EU and Russia are far from improving and the situation could even deteriorate further in the coming months.
