Donald Tusk calls for European sanctions against Russian and Belarusian agricultural products
\n\nIn a recent statement, Donald Tusk, the former president of the European Council and current leader of the European People's Party, urged the European Union to impose sanctions on the agricultural products coming from the Russia and the Belarus.\n\n
Tusk calls for increased retaliatory measures
\n\nAccording to him, this movement would be an appropriate response to the growing involvement of these countries in activities perceived as hostile towards the European Union. This includes supporting military rebellions in various Eastern European countries and the continued persecution of human rights within their own borders.\n\n
Sanctions: a means of political pressure
\n\nDonald Tusk also hoped that these sanctions against the agricultural products could act as a form of political pressure that would force the Russia and the Belarus to change course. He referred to the fact that the sanctions previously imposed by the European Union have been very effective in changing Russia's behavior and have led to significant reforms in various areas.\n\n
Repercussions on bilateral relations
\n\nHowever, it is inevitable that this proposal will lead to significant repercussions in Europe's bilateral relations with Russia and Belarus. Both these countries may consider these sanctions as a form of aggression or an attempt by the European Union to interfere in their internal affairs.\n\nThat being said, the appeal of Donald Tusk for sanctions indirectly through agricultural products suggests a new form of diplomacy – one that uses trade and economics as political negotiating tools. Only time will tell if this approach will be effective in resolving European conflicts with the Russia and the Belarus. \n\n
