Introduction to Cholera

\n\nCholera is an infectious disease of the intestine which manifests itself by severe diarrhea which can lead to fatal dehydration if not treated quickly. It is a rare disease in developed countries, but it remains a threat in some parts of the world, especially when natural disasters or conflicts lead to unsanitary living conditions. \n\n

How is transmitted Cholera

\n\nCholera is caused by a bacteria called Vibrio cholerae. This bacteria is mainly transmitted by consuming water or food contaminated by the stools of an infected person. \n\n

Transmission by water

\n\nA cholera outbreak can occur when there is contamination of drinking water sources with fecal matter. This is particularly common in areas where sanitation infrastructure is insufficient or damaged.\n\n

Transmission through food

\n\nCholera bacteria can also be found in food. In particular, raw or undercooked seafood, as well as fruits and vegetables washed with contaminated water, can be vectors of transmission.\n\n

THE Symptoms of Cholera

\n\nSymptoms of cholera usually appear between 12 hours and 5 days after exposure to the bacteria. However, many infected people do not show symptoms. When present, symptoms can range from mild to severe.\n\nZ

Mild symptoms

\n\nIn minor cases, symptoms may resemble those of gastroenteritis and include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and mild dehydration.\n\n

Severe symptoms

\n\nIn severe cases, the disease can quickly progress to severe and life-threatening dehydration. Symptoms may include heavy watery diarrhea, intense vomiting, rapid weight loss, intense thirst, decreased urination, and extreme fatigue. \n\n
