An engineer's innovative project in Ardèche to record the gradual abandonment of the department's rail network
Ardèche facing a railway desert
Known for its grandiose landscapes and its rich terroir, the department ofArdeche is also marked by a worrying phenomenon: the depopulation of its railway network. This "rail desert" is becoming increasingly apparent as trains are replaced by coaches on many routes.
An engineer takes up the challenge
Faced with this situation, an engineer from Ardèche, passionate about railway heritage, decided to document the history and evolution of the network in the department. His goal? Raise awareness of the importance of preserving and revitalizing this heritage, while contributing to a better understanding of the transport challenge in rural areas.
Documenting the past to preserve the future
The project of this engineer is both original and ambitious. Through her research, she tracks down traces of the past, collects testimonies from former railway workers and brings together previously unpublished archival documents on the history of the railway network in Ardèche.
Particular attention to railway heritage
This documentation work is also an opportunity to highlight the architecture of stations, often neglected despite its historical and cultural importance. So many symbols of a time when the train was at the heart of the life of the Ardéchois.
Towards collective awareness?
By documenting this railway desert, the Ardèche engineer hopes to contribute to raising awareness of the need to preserve and promote this heritage. Because behind the abandoned rails and disused stations lies part of the identity of theArdeche, which deserves to be known and passed on to future generations.
